Around the Mountains
Activities along the Trail
The Around the Mountains trail winds it way through several small towns, past mountains, lakes, rivers and farmlands. Stop along the way for a bite to eat, explore historic railways, relax by the river…the options go on.

Biking
If you just can’t get enough of biking as well as the amazing Around the Mountains Trail there’s a pump track at the Lumsden School to keep the kids (and big kids) entertained on summer evenings.
For the more adventurous, check out Welcome Rock for historic mountain biking trails, or venture into the Eyre Mountains (see Doc for more info).

Fishing
Southland is a fishing heaven. Under big skies and surrounded by awesome mountain ranges, you can escape all distractions as you cast for brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon.
The Mataura Valley is known as a ‘dry-fly mecca’ and is one of the best trout fishing rivers in the world.
The Oreti river has world class fishing, stop in at Hurleys Flyfishing Shop in Lumsden for tips and equipment.

Hiking
Southland is renowned for its remarkable hiking tracks that venture into wild and rugged landscapes, so there is no better way to get amongst it all. There is a huge range available catering to many different abilities, so it is important that you select a walk that best suits your skills.
